On our way to Kerry, we will stop to visit the Cliffs of Moher which rise 390 ft above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag’s Head, and reach their maximum height of 702 ft just north of O’Brien’s Tower. The cliffs receive almost one million visitors a year. O’Brien’s Tower is a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien to impress female visitors. From the cliffs and from atop the watchtower, visitors can see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Maumturks, and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north, and Loop Head to the south. There are many animals living on the cliffs: 30,000 birds of 29 species. The most intersting are the famous Atlantic Puffins which live in large colonies at isoloated parts of the cliffs. We then visit the Burren region, which is intentionally famous for its rocky landscape, unusual combination of flora, thousands of archaeological sites, and unique farming traditions. Afterwards, we continue via Adare and make a stop in this charming village. We then head to our hotel for check-in. Diner & Overnight in Kerry.
DAY 4 – FRIDAY, July 18 – Jaunting Car Ride – Ring of Kerry – Skellig Experience
Today we are picked up at our hotel in a jaunting car for a tour of Killarney National Park – over 25,425 acres of diverse ecology, including the Lakes of Killarney, Oak and Yew woodlands of international importance, and mountain peaks. It has Ireland’s only native herd of Red Deer and the most extensive covering of native forest remaining in Ireland. The park is of high ecological value because of the quality, diversity, and extensiveness of many of its habitats and the wide variety of rare species that they accommodate. The ride ends at Ross Castle. Our bus then takes us to the breath-taking vistas of mountains, cliffs, and beaches on Ireland’s most popular drive, the 100-mile Ring of Kerry. Starting from Killarney, heading around the Iveragh Peninsula, and passing through Kenmare, Sneem, Waterville (favorite holiday spot of Charlie Chaplin that now has a statue of him to commemorate his love of the place.) Cahersiveen and Killorglin. Next, we will visit the Skellig Experience on the way back to Kerry for dinner, a 3-course dinner in a local restaurant or pub in town. We return to hotel in Kerry for dinner and overnight.
DAY 5 – SATURDAY, July 19 – Blarney Castle – Cobh Heritage Centre – Cork
We depart today today for the Cork region. Our first visit will be to Blarney Castle, a medieval stronghold dating to 1446. The castle is now a partial ruin with some accessible rooms and battlements. At the top of the castle is now a partial ruin with some accessible rooms and battlements. At the top of the castle lies the Stone of Eloquence, better known as the Blarney Stone. Tourists visiting Blarney Castle may hang upside-down over a sheer drop to kiss the stone, which is said to give the gift of eloquence. There are many legends as to the origin of the stone, but some say that it was the Lia Fáil – a magical stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. The ritual of kissing the Blarney Stone has been performed by millions of people, including world statesmen, literary giants, and legends of the silver screen. The kiss, however, is not casually achieved. To touch the stone with one’s lips, the participant must ascend to the castle’s peak, then lean over backwards on the parapet’s edge. We then continue to Cobh to visit the Cobh Heritage Centre. Here we learn about the “Queenstown Story” of Irish Emigration. The scattering of the Irish is one of the great migration stories of the 3 million that left from this port. Follow the story from the 1600’s when transportation to the British overseas colonies was commonplace, from Virginia and New England to Barbados, Jamacia, and Monserrat. Learn about the transportation of convicts to Australia and the connection between this port town and two of the biggest shipping disasters of the early 20th century. The Titanic & The Lusitania. This beautiful, imformative, and sometimes emotional Exhibition is situated within Cobh’s beautifully restored Victorian railway station, a building with its own historic story. At the end of a wonderful day, we head to our hotel in Cork for dinner & overnight.
